Topic Selection & Proposal Support

Selecting a topic is just the beginning of a more complex development process—one that varies based on whether you are in a PhD program or an EdD, DBA, or DNP program. It also varies based on your specific program requirements. Most often, doctoral candidates must find a current, significant gap in the literature, also called a research problem, to motivate their studies. We provide support by helping you evaluate whether a potential gap aligns with the requirements that matter most.

We help you align your topic with:

  • Degree program and specialization
  • University-specific requirements for study types and methodology
  • Established qualitative and quantitative design conventions
  • Chair and committee preferences
  • Your ability to access or collect data
  • Your own scholarly interests and preferences

After the research gap is found and articulated, the purpose and research questions should be devised. Using key words and phrases from your research gap statement is key to achieving alignment across your study’s foundational elements.

We use a clear, structured coaching process refined over more than a decade to help you work toward doctoral standards at this stage and through the development of your full proposal.

    Literature Review Structuring & Synthesis

The literature review, usually Chapter 2, can be the most challenging part of the dissertation because of its required length and the need for doctoral-level synthesis and critical analysis. The key purpose of a literature review is to argue in favor of the need for your study and its methodological approach.

The literature review builds on the gap in the literature defined during topic selection, using gradually narrowing sections devoted to key themes and sub-themes to show that the knowledge you seek does not yet exist, despite all of the research that has been published.

We guide you through this process using Galvan and Galvan’s (2024) approach, which combines deductive keyword searching with inductive formulation of themes and sub-themes so your Chapter 2 literature review reflects your field’s current understandings and leads to an effective argument in favor of your study.

Methodology Design: Qualitative, Quantitative & Mixed Methods

It is easy to get lost in the many qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research designs. We help you understand the implications of design choices before they create avoidable roadblocks.

    Qualitative

Phenomenology, case study, participatory action research, ethnography, grounded theory, narrative inquiry, generic qualitative, and related designs.

    Quantitative

Descriptive, correlational, correlational-predictive, causal-comparative, quasi-experimental, experimental, and other designs.

    Mixed Methods

Convergent parallel, exploratory sequential, explanatory sequential, embedded, and related mixed-method approaches.

Each design comes with requirements or conventions related to sample size, data sources, analysis, feasibility, and ethical considerations. Our methodology support helps you understand those implications early so you can make informed, defensible decisions.

    Data Analysis Guidance & Interpretation

At Optimum, we provide structured guidance for data analysis and interpretation that aligns with university ethics standards for research support. Coaching is especially important here because analysis can feel like working in a foreign language—with its own software.

    Quantitative Analysis Guidance

Statistical analysis in the social sciences often involves IBM SPSS. Our lead quantitative specialist has over 10 years of experience providing PhD-level support to help candidates understand assumptions, descriptive analyses, inferential testing, and hypothesis-focused interpretation.

    • Data cleaning and preparation
    • Descriptive and univariate testing
    • Bivariate testing, including ANOVA, t tests, and simple regression
    • Multivariate testing, including multiple regression, MANOVA, mediation, and moderation

    Qualitative Analysis Guidance

We specialize in qualitative analysis support and can help you understand tools such as NVivo, MAXQDA, ATLAS.ti, and Dedoose. We help you avoid common thematic analysis pitfalls, including interpreting too early in the analysis process. In all cases, we use Saldaña’s (2025) authoritative Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers to help you understand the most common coding methods in dissertation research:

    • First-cycle coding: open, descriptive, initial, and in-vivo coding
    • Second-cycle coding: pattern, axial, focused, and theoretical coding
    • Theme development, interpretation, and presentation of findings

    Dissertation Editing & Formatting

We offer flexible dissertation editing support to match your needs, including clarity-focused editing, formatting, citation review, and guidance on responsible revision when plagiarism, citation, or AI-use concerns have been flagged.

We are experts with APA 7 requirements and also offer editing aligned with Turabian, Chicago, Harvard, and other style guides.

    Editing support may include:

    • Formatting front matter, tables of contents, and lists of tables and figures
    • Line-by-line editing for grammar, syntax, mechanics, clarity, and readability
    • Formatting headings, tables, and figures
    • Aligning reference list entries with APA 7 requirements
    • Conducting reference audits to align in-text citations and reference list entries
    • Reviewing detailed APA rules for numbers, capitalization, job titles, theories, statistical notation, abbreviations, and italicization
